About This Lesson

In this unit, students will explore the theme of journeys—both real and imagined—through a mix of informational and literary texts. They’ll read stories of physical adventures, such as Captain Sullenberger’s autobiography, Highest Duty, and Cheryl Strayed’s memoir, Wild, as well as inner journeys found in poems by Robert Frost and Mary Oliver, and the short story "Volar" by Judith Ortiz Cofer. Along the way, students will ask how journeys help us understand the world and ourselves. By the end of the unit, they’ll use what they’ve learned to write their own informative pieces, applying key features of informational writing to share ideas and insights.
