About This Lesson

📚 Unit Synopsis: From Reading to Reasoning—Exploring Argumentative Texts Across Genres

This dynamic unit, fully aligned with McGraw-Hill’s StudySync program, invites students to engage deeply with a diverse range of texts while mastering the art of argument. With all materials included, teachers can guide students through compelling selections—from open letters and scientific theory to poetry, classical epics, and graphic novels.

Students will analyze powerful examples of argumentative writing, including “An Indian Father’s Plea,” excerpts from The Singularity Is Near and Outliers, and the dual perspectives in “The Origin of Intelligence.” They’ll also explore genre-bending pieces like Pat Mora’s “Señora X No More” and a graphic novel adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey, building critical thinking across literary forms.

By unit’s end, students will transform from thoughtful readers into confident writers, crafting their own argumentative pieces informed by rich textual models and genre exploration. This unit doesn’t just teach argument—it cultivates voice, perspective, and intellectual agility.
